The campus-like setting of mellow brick buildings dating
from the 1880s creates a warm and comfortable background
to the impressive technology assets of the Technology
Park, including state-of-the-art fiber optic
telecommunications infrastructure for voice lines and
high-speed data and Internet access.
Several major long distance telephone carriers have
located switching centers in downtown Springfield or the
Technology Park, making the city a major switch center
for the Northeast. In Springfield the connection
to regional telephone operating companies is sold on a
per-foot basis between the business and the selected
long-distance carrier; in most other cities, that
distance has to be purchased on a per-mile basis.
Springfield switch centers are interconnected by a fiber
optic cable network which provides tremendous
telecommunications capability and higher bandwidth
capacity, so that the STCC Technology Park is now one of
the least expensive locations for a business to send and
receive high-speed data transmissions in New England, if
not the East Coast. Fiber-optic cables laid
alongside the Massachusetts Turnpike, and major
interstate highways cross through the Springfield area
and are connected to the Technology Park.
The increasing concentration of telecommunications
companies has created a telecommunications
"hotel" at the Park through which
companies may rent telecommunications capacity from
other companies as necessary.
Springfield is located at the crossroads of the
national and international fiber optic backbones serving
the Northeast. Locating "on network"
provides the maximum benefits of low cost, redundancy,
and route diversity.
